The table illustrates how much waste was produced in cities and regional areas of six nations between 1980 and 2000. In summary, the United States had by far the largest amount of rubbish of all over the entire period in question while the Irish produced the least.
In terms of Ireland, Japan, Portugal and the United States, in 1980, residents in Japan produced 30 million tonnes of rubbish, and this figure was significantly higher than that for Portugal and Ireland, at merely 2 million and 0.6 million respectively. However, Americans contributed considerably more garbage than people in any other country, at 129 million. During the following two decades, the amount of rubbish produced experienced a rise in these countries, albeit to varying degrees, reaching 52 million in Japan, 5 million in Portugal, 3 million in Ireland and 214 million in America.
Regarding the other two nations, Korea did not record any data until 1990 when 40 million tonnes of rubbish were produced, but the amount had dropped to 31 million by 2000. In contrast, the amount in Poland was 10 million initially, and then it increased slightly to 11 million before decreasing almost back to the figure in 1980, at 9.9 million.
